October is Artober in Chico!

Fall Vineyard by June Carey

(Fall Vineyard by June Carey at Chico Paper Co)

Have you ever seen a person ooze? Maybe you have. You might see it with people in love, oozing tenderness and desire. You might see a person ooze with excitement, or with passion for a cause. I’ve seen a person ooze- several persons, in fact. I saw it during last year’s Open Studio Art Tour, and you can see it too, if you visit the open studios this month during Artoberfest…Read More…

Archive- September 2009

Where's your burger?GoLocalChico is on the hunt for the best burger in town!

Where do you go when you want the real thing, not the dollar menu on the run? Make it local…make it sloppy, make it delicious, make it out of your preferred source of protein- whatever makes you really happy- we want to know!

Send us news of your favorite Chico burgers and where they can be found. We will be posting some of your reviews and comments throughout the month so check back and see where the hot spots are!

In October we will feature the top picks and reviews in our “Finding Chico’s Best Burgers” feature.

Over the Summer I have been thinking about ways I could give the family a mid-week break without breaking my budget. After all, I often hear about ideas for “Budget Dates” for couples. What about when you have a few more personalities in the house? You need a little fun for the kids and a little R&R for the grown ups- but it’s one of those weeks where a trip to the movies just isn’t in the equation.

cropped 5 mile kidsIMG_0226

So, here is one of my family’s favorite dates. We enjoy going on a “tadpole adventure” at 5-Mile with a picnic dinner. Alright, maybe it’s not terribly original- but it is a great spot and in the evenings it is a quiet nook. If we are lucky we might end up with free pets! We call that science at my house- (we also call them temporary guests.)

If I think ahead, the kids and I go to Farmers Market in the morning to pick up a variety of veggies and fruit (cucumber $.33 at the farmers market last week!) Otherwise, we just raid the garden and see what we can come up with. This week the peaches look good, our tomatoes are ready and the oregano is so fragrant!

I usually have tortillas, peanut butter and bananas on hand so that is quick and fun for the kids to whip together. For the grown ups, hummus wraps are refreshing in the Chico heat. What goes in them depends largely on what treasures I raided from the garden or purchased at the Farmer’s Market. If I have the few essential ingredients I can throw together some hummus in the processor. If not, there are yummy hummus selections down at the corner store.

Then I am ready to throw a few cold drinks in a cooler with my tomato salad, wraps, and fruit. I bring along my old Mexican picnic blanket to throw on the rocky creek bed or a couple of chairs. Don’t forget the towels for the one who will inevitably “slip” in the creek, and a bucket for the kids temporary “pets.”

The kids can happily frolic on their tadpole hunt while the hubby and I unwind a bit and enjoy the evening with our feet in the creek. It is a beautiful spot, so be sure you “pack out what you pack in” as they say, and avoid bringing in glass with the rocks and all. It is also good to know that there is a nice restroom there- always something moms like to check out beforehand.

Drop us an email with some of your favorite “family date” spots, or summer recipes and share the wealth! – L. Harty

Hummus roll recipe

“Need an easy Summer appetizer? Hummus is a flavorful tortilla filling or veggie dip.”

P8160225 hummus wrap small email size

INGREDIENTS:

1 (15.5 ounce) can garbanzo beans or chickpeas, drained- but reserve the liquid

1t. minced or 1 fresh clove garlic

1t. cilantro leaves

2T. tahini (ground sesame)

2T lemon juice

3T olive oil

¼ t. cayenne pepper

¼ t.cumin

1/8 t. coriander

Salt and pepper to taste

Additional zingers for your own variation:

roasted red peppers, pitted kalamata olives, fresh basil, roasted garlic, or sundried tomatoes packed in oil

Hummus flavors blend well if left for a few hours or overnight in the fridge.

DIRECTIONS:

First put your clove of garlic in the bowl of the processor or blender and pulse until minced, then add drained garbanzo beans in the bowl and blend, then add all other ingredients. Cover and process until smooth.

If you want a smoother hummus gradually add 1-2T of reserved garbanzo liquid Refrigerate hummus until you are ready to use, keeps for a good 6 days or so.

Spread a layer of hummus on a tortilla, then layer mixed greens, spinach, bell peppers and sliced cucumber. Roll it all together and you have a wonderful Summer wrap perfect for a picnic at the creek!

A Chico Pumpkin Day

There are so many treats to enjoy in Chico at this time of year- the weather thinks about cooling off, the sunsets are spectacular, and the foliage swings into its new autumn wardrobe.  Where do you like to go this time of year?  My family has an annual pumpkin picking expedition to look forward to among other things.  We used to love to go to Book Family Farm for pumpkins and fun but since they are not doing their pumpkin patch this season we have other local alternatives to investigate.

Enjoy the Autumn air, decorate for Fall and support your local pumpkin patches, they will certainly appreciate it!

pumpkins-L

Chico High School FFA Pumpkin Patch is located at off of East at Guynn and Henshaw (Look for the big orange signs. ) This is the first year for this student planted patch, they also have gourds and zinnias for sale. Harvest fun, kid games and a decorate your mini pumpkin booth make this a great little stop. This is a Supervised Agriculture Experience Project for the Chico High School FFA . Pink in the Plaza

Ribbon TeeOn the calendar this year is a new downtown event- Pink in the Plaza. “Uniting campus with community” is the dream of organizer Amber Lowry, from Delta Sigma Pi.  On and off campus organizations are working together to sponsor this 1st Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Fair held in the downtown plaza for the purpose of raising funds for breast cancer research. The proceeds are to be divided between: Susan G. Komen, Breast Cancer Action, Enloe Cancer Center, and the next Breast Cancer Awareness Fair.

The “C” word was once an unmentionable in our society, and many women and men fought their battles without support.  As times have changed, we have learned that support from friends, family, and community can help survivors and fighters with their daily journey.  Fairs such as this one not only raise funds for needed research, but help us as a community to recognize and unite in the ongoing fight against breast cancer.

~2.4 million women living in the U.S. have been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer.*

~An estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in American women during 2009. About 1,910 new cases of breast cancer are expected in men.*

This past year Amber’s mother joined the ranks of cancer survivors, as did my sister-in-law.  How quickly we are united across ethnic, cultural, and economic lines as cancer is no respector of persons and touches all our lives. Our survivors inspire us daily to follow our passions and to believe that we can make a difference.

Please come and Support the cause! Join us on October 10, anytime from 9 am to 3 pm in the Downtown Plaza, for music, vendors, raffles, food, games, kids zone, speakers, silent auction and more!

For more information contact Amber Lowry at (916)719-3115, ALowry31@gmail.com, or view the event poster

T-shirts may also be pre-ordered – please contact Aaron at pinkintheplaza@gmail.com
