Thankful Season

A small old ceramic bowl filled with little offerings sits on my desk. It reminds me of a monk’s alms bowl, but instead of being filled with food or money, my bowl is full of gifts from many of the people whose gardens I visited or who shared their gardening stories on In a North State Garden this year. The offerings include things like a lacy tomatilla skeleton, a sculptural spice bush seed pod, an owl faced walnut shell, the aerodynamic shape of a winged maple seed, a fragrant California bay leaf (Umbellularia californica), a white birch bark curl, silvery dried grandfather sage leaves, a plastic baggie of Humboldt lily seeds, a pinch of paprika, a small vial of lavender oil, a heart shaped pebble….and more. These offerings add layers of meaning, the ritual of giving and the creation of memory to my garden. And meaning, ritual and memory add depth and dimension to anyone’s garden and gardening… Read Full Article… Thankful Season by Jennifer Jewell, www.jewellgarden.com

Circle of Life

Lately I’ve been seeing spots.

Little circles, lined up neatly in rows. I think about them frequently – sometimes daily, in fact. Perfect. Little. Circles. How can I get more of them? I must have more!

No, I don’t need to talk to someone about this, but thanks for asking. There’s a sane reason behind this crazy obsession with circles.

Like most people, I need to exercise a little more. (Okay, a lot more.) My mental and physical health is so much better when exercise is a consistent part of my life. You’d think recognizing that truth would be enough for me to make exercising a priority, but for some reason, I don’t…Read More…

Pomegranates Antioxidant Power…and Recipes

pomegranate

Pomegranates are in season, and evidently, they are very powerful fruit. You can juice them (It takes about 3 medium size fruit to yield a cup of juice), or eat the fruit.  The juice is beneficial as well as the pulp, inner skin of the fruit, and the oil in the seeds.  Hopefully,  as it becomes more and more evident to the general population that fresh whole plant foods are key to long and healthy lives, changes to our eating habits will insure more of our friends and family will be protected from serious debilitating diseases.

So, if you have a pomegranate bush, be sure to make use of that fruit:  eat them, share them, and give them!

According to an excerpt from Senior Journal, (http://seniorjournal.com/NEWS/Nutrition-Vitamins/5-09-29PomegranateHot.htm), a single pomegranate provides 40 percent of an adult’s recommended daily allowance of vitamin C and is a rich source of folic acid and vitamins A and E.

One pomegranate also contains three times the antioxidant properties of red wine or green tea.

Pomegranates contain high levels of flavenoids,  a type of antioxidant, which are exceptionally effective at neutralizing cancer-causing free radicals.

New research has found that one glass of pomegranate juice a day could improve blood flow to the heart by more than a third. The fruit’s antioxidant properties prevent bad cholesterol from forming, which keeps the arteries clear and reduces the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes.

The most recent revelation about the pomegranate’s health benefits suggests that extracts of the fruit could prevent the onset of osteoarthritis.

Bridging the Gap by Giving

Bridging the Gap by Giving

“In exploring the worlds of developing countries such as Mexico, the Philippines, Africa and most recently Nepal, I have become aware of our country’s abundance in contrast to developing countries, which has heightened my compassion for their people and their needs.”

Founded by local girl Shirley Adams, Bridging the Gap Foundation is helping to raise awareness to something we often take for granted. In much of the world there is a desperate need for clean, drinkable water. “Water is the foundation of every village, then comes the growing of crops, health, education, and micro enterprises. People begin to thrive instead of just surviving.” The funds raised by Bridging the Gap helps to build safe water systems in these developing countries.

Water Girl“Our trip to Zambia with World Vision was more than we could have imagined. One of my highlights was drinking from a Klean Kanteen bottle full of fresh water from a bore hole. The water was refreshing and I didn’t get sick. The villages that had clean water were thriving: gardens were planted, fish farms were being created, children were in school and more. It was hard to leave these thriving areas and travel to areas where people are drinking from mud holes.”

Shirley runs Bridging the Gap Market with beautiful goods made by hand from women in communities from around the world, she speaks to groups about her Foundation, and has organized a local Water Walk as well as a Coast to Coast ride. Bridging The Gap (BTG) has raised $249,095 in the past three and half years through business sponsors, donations and participation by North Valley residents. This money has given safe water to 7,117 people for life in developing countries. It is amazing to see what can be done when resources are chanelled and inspiration given. Each little bit adds up, sponsors may match what is individually given and before you know it there is enough to make a difference- the North Valley has helped to make a difference in over 7,000 lives! Bridging the Gap Market

Bridging the Gap is having its Fourth Annual Christmas Boutique on December 4 from 2-7pm & December 5 from 11-5 pm at the home of Shirley Adams, 45 Parkside Court. Enjoy shopping for gifts from around the world, including Africa, Nepal, India, Mexico, and South America. We will also be showcasing hometown favorites featuring: Andante Alpacas, The Sassy Satchel and Le Pippin. Last year’s Christmas Boutique raised $4,249.00 for Bridging the Gap!

Keep your eyes open for the next Water Walk, and see how your group can participate in helping our global community with clean water and Bridging the Gap. Contact Shirley Adams to find out how you can become a supporter of Bridging the Gap and how you can make an impact on our thirsty world. www.bridgingthagapbygiving.org
